Thousands of teachers could lose their jobs once computer-based learning is fully implemented in Kenyan schools.

Education minister George Saitoti said yesterday that the country was making major strides towards realising e-learning that is cheap and needs less manpower.

He said the information and communication technology (ICT) method is cheap and cost effective compared to the current modes of teaching used in schools.

He said: "With e-learning one teacher can reach many learners through video-conferencing and other modes."

He however noted that many teachers are computer illiterate and not positioned to participate in implementing the new method. "Kenya has a total of 235,000 teachers in primary, secondary schools and tertiary institutions. Many of these are not ICT literate," he said.
